Maratua Island the Underwater Paradise of East Kalimantan
Maratua Island is located in the Derawan Archipelago, off the north coast of East Kalimantan. One of a stunningly beautiful outermost island in Berau Regency, East Kalimantan. Maratua Island is a large tropical island with upside down U- shaped island covers about 384 square kilometers of sandy white beaches and mangrove forests and 3,735 square km of territorial waters. The Derawan Archipelago includes the islands of Sangalaki, Derawan, Kakaban and Maratua island. Hundreds of turtles frequent this portion of the ocean, gliding gracefully about in search of food. The island is also a nesting ground where Green Turtles return each year to lay their eggs, hence resulting in Maratua sometimes named the “Turtle Capital of Indonesia”. The Big Fish Country is located between the islands of Maratua and Nabucco, where the stronger currents bring the big fish in to play. Many pelagic creatures like Manta Rays, Eagle Rays, Tuna and Mackerel roam this channel together with schools of Barracuda, White Tip Sharks, and even the occasional Hammerhead.

How do we get to Maratua Island? Maratua Island now has an airport that can accommodate small to medium-sized aircraft, with a runway measuring 1,600 meters. The route from Jakarta is via Balikpapan, Berau, and Maratua. Alternatively, we can take a regular speedboat or charter one from Sanggam Pier in Tanjung Redeb City, Berau Regency, with a travel time of approximately three hours. However, the three-hour journey is well worth the effort, as the natural scenery is breathtakingly beautiful.
