Balikpapan Orangutan Tour includes spending night at Samboja Lodge Orangutan Rehabilitation Center and taking a nature trail through the forest. You will also visit the Orangutan Handmade Island and Sun Bear Sanctuary for feeding time, the feeding time is arranged in the morning and the afternoon. Other highlights you will walk through the jungle and climb up to the Canopy Bridge at Bangkirai Hill, trekking to Wain River Protection Forest. You will take an afternoon canoe at Black River to find wild proboscis monkeys and see the local fisherman village along the river.
Some orangutans live on man-made islands (a nice walk from the Samboja Lodge). The Island orangutans are not released candidates, due to handicaps and misbehavior.
Therefore, they can only be viewed from the land. Every day workers bring over many kinds of fruits, vegetables and enrichments. As it’s located on several islands, the worker uses the small boat to bring supplies.
Visiting Sun Bear Sanctuary: Samboja Lodge is home to one of the world’s largest sun bear projects. We can see the Lodge’s staff feed the bears, activities at the sun bear compound will begin at 8 am and end at 4 pm. The bear compound is a short 15-minute walk from the Samboja Lodge. It would be best if you exercised a bit of caution when around the sanctuary bears.
One of the highlights of Balikpapan Orangutan Tour is visiting the Office Tower: It’s also the office of the Borneo Orangutan Survival Foundation, from this tower, we could see their plantation project to grow the forest area. At the end of the tour, you will be served by Indonesian buffet menu. Do not worry about vegetarianism, it’s also provided. Enjoy the meals with the exciting restaurant panorama in the forest.
